Above a new Jack ready 6/1/09We have been Breeding Dogs for over 35 years!!!!!! Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) CERF was founded by a group of concerned purebred owner/breeders with a goal of eliminating heritable eye diseases in purebred dogs through registration, research, and education. CERF is dedicated to educating the public on matters involving canine eye disease. It provides a variety of reports to help educate owner/breeder on heritable eye disease questions, healthy breeding stock, and breed-specific eye problems. The Genetics Committee of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists lists Lens Luxation and Cataracts in its Occular Disorders Presumed to be Inherited in Purebred Dogs for the Jack Russell Terrier. Occurrence of a defect can not be anticipated in a given terrier, and the age of onset of the disorder(s) varies from quite early (less than one year of age) to several years of age. The JRTCA Breeder's Committee is urging terrier owners to have their Jack Russell's CERF tested yearly. Don't be fooled into waiting for a symptom of an eye problem. Many times there are none. Early detection and reporting is important to the future of the Jack Russell Terrier. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) This test records brain responses to click sounds delivered to an ear. It does not require a behavioral response from the animal, hence no chance of misinterpretation of a dog's response. The test can be done quickly (with the appropriate equipment), and will give a definitive record of each ear's response to sound. The BAER is currently being used to eliminate or reduce the incidence of genetic expression of deafness from several breeds of dogs (i.e., Dalmatians, English Setters). Since deafness is a genetic defect, and since it appears essentially at 2-3 weeks of age, testing the pup anytime after 5 weeks of age with the BAER has become an excellent way to identify the auditory status of individual dogs. This deafness trait has not been observed to develop gradually in dogs, and does seem to be an all-or-none situation for each ear. Bilateral - deaf in both ears (i.e., totally deaf) Unilateral - deaf in one ear (often called "unis

New Jacks are Here
New Puppy Supply List
We get so many questions about what new owners should
buy to get ready for their new family member that we decided
to make this list. Some things on the list are necessities while
others are just things we think are nice to have.
1. Crate We really believe in crate training. It not only helps
with potty training but keeps your puppy out of trouble when
you can't keep on eye on him. Plus, it gives them a safe
home where they can feel secure. Your puppy's crate
should be tall enough for him to stand up in and big enough
for him to turn around. Don't get one too big or it won't be as
cozy for him.
2. Food HOOSIER CANUCK KENNELS feeds only PEDIGREGEE DOG FOOD. WE USE CAN PUPPY FOOD WITH CONDENSED MILK TILL 8 WEEKS old.
3. Food and water bowls There are many cute ones out
there but we like the classic stainless steel bowls. They won't
break, they are inexpensive, and puppies don't chew them
up!
4. Bed When your puppy is not in his crate or playing, he
will want a bed to rest in. We put one in each room we spend
much time in because Russells like to follow you around.
You won't need a very large bed. Try a snuggle ball, nest
bed, or bolster bed for maximum comfort. .
5. Toys If you don't give your puppy something good to
chew on he will chew on your stuff! Small stuffed animals,
pigs ears, and puppy bones are a staple around here. Our
very favorite chew treats are liver snaps. They are good for
the puppy's teeth, are completely safe, and don't make a
mess. We love them.
6. Flea preventative When your puppy goes home at 8
weeks it will be old enough to start on a topical flea
preventative. We recommend Frontline Plus because it
controls fleas and ticks, it is safe and effective, plus it is
waterproof.
7. Heartworm preventative Another important
preventative to keep your puppy on each and every month is
a heartworm preventative. We like Interceptor flavor tabs.
Our dogs think they are treats so they are easy to
administer. Plus, they offer protection from other common
parasites. You will have to get these at your vet's office.
a leash you will need a harness. Puppies at this age are too
small to be led on a collar. I think harnesses are better for
general walking regardless of age because they don't hurt a
dog's neck.
We Recommend dog Insurance at least if you have a doctor vist it will be in yout budgit.Check out our link at www.hoosiercanuckkennels.net for the link.
